Initially, when the network was forming, participants were all counterparts in various institutions working with the Joint FAO/IAEA Centre of Nuclear Techniques in Food and Agriculture. Their common link was that each was in some way involved in research or capacity building projects supported by the IAEA in cooperation with the FAO. This network of stakeholders united in a joint effort to progress and strengthen food safety control systems in Africa. Testing laboratories are the foundation. Testing food samples is key to monitoring and controlling the safety and quality of the food supply. Having these laboratories reach out to others and each share intelligence, resources and information on food safety matters is important. Best practice and food safety control is encouraged through such collaborations, that also include support for the use of analytical techniques, the transfer of human resources, promulgating career development opportunities, improving risk analysis and standard setting processes. Each has a role both individually and collectively in ensuring consumer safety as well as facilitating trade in foodstuffs within and beyond the African continent.
